Laguna Kaan Luum: the lagoon you don’t want to miss in Tulum
A hidden treasure: this is probably the best definition for Laguna Kaan Luum, one of Tulum’s most attractive sites but also one of the most fascinating places in the world.
Laguna Kaan Luum is a lagoon located just south of Tulum and part of its attractiveness is due to the fact that the area is pretty secluded. This very peculiar location, in fact, doesn’t allow Laguna Kaan Luum to be visited easily and that makes a quick trip in this amazing corner of Mexico even more unforgettable. Laguna Kaan Luum has kept its power intact through the years because the entire area of Tulum is so magnificent that visitors often have too many places to see and too little time. This lagoon is definitely a remarkable sight.
Laguna Kaan Luum is characterized by a unique color of the water. Why is its water so peculiar? Because the center of the lagoon is a deep cenote. Let’s take a step back and refresh our memory about what cenotes are: they are natural pits or sinkholes resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock exposing groundwater underneath. Cenotes are a typical beauty of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, and they were known even in ancient times, and considered sacred by the Maya. The term cenote derives from a Yucatan Maya’s word identifying any location with accessible groundwater and they are, in fact, common geological forms in low latitude regions such as islands and coastlines.
Going back to our amazing Laguna Kaan Luum, it is also important to state that its center, the deep cenote making its water so unique in color, is about 262 feet deep, which is about 80 meters. The color contrast is especially visible between the center of the lagoon and its sides.
Of course, whoever chooses Laguna Kaan Luum as their destination has a precise plan in mind: swimming! And this is, in fact, one of the most wonderful places in the world to immerse yourself in crystalline, clean, bright waters. Laguna Kaan Luum is also quite safe for swimmers because most of the water is knee-to-shoulder deep. Plus, the water is always clear, with a slight green-tourquoise color.
Finally, do not forget to treat everything that makes this place so beautiful with absolute respect: natural treasures such as Laguna Kaan Luum should always be considered precious and cherished fully.
